Complex Trauma Cases: Complete Guide to Coding and Reimbursement
Course Description:
Coding complex injuries and life-threatening events resulting from trauma can be overwhelming for coders. This webinar will cover methods of triaging injuries and events from the time the Trauma patient enters through the ED doors until the patient is admitted or sent to the operating room. Sequelae of trauma resulting in prolonged hospitalization, planned returns to the operating room and additional medical care will be discussed. Emergency room providers and trauma surgeons each have a unique role to play in the care of these complex patients and the coding for them needs to be fully captured as the patient’s condition evolves. The role of the intensivist is an additional layer of care and coordination that should not be overlooked. Please join us for an hour of fast paced, informative and interactive discussion of these cases and best coding practices.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn to identify the correct principal or primary ICD-10-CM diagnosis code for each provider and injury
- Learn how to track the evolution of the patient’s condition and capture appropriate diagnoses
- Identify how to avoid overlap in charging and coding between providers
- Review best documentation practices for capturing charges and patient acuity in the trauma setting
- Address charge capture for bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and strategies for identifying missed documentation and coding opportunities
- Review how to determine billable from bundled services
- Learn how to apply modifiers where applicable
- Learn when to query for clarification of events in the chaos encountered for patients presenting with multiple injuries
